Battery trackers cover the assets that sit in a yard, get towed to site, and have no ignition of their own. Magnetic mount, IP67/IP68 sealed, and reporting cadences tuned to stretch battery life — idle assets check in a couple of times a day, moving assets report more often. If the asset has its own power, a wired-in tracker gives you live tracking and engine data instead.

How long do the batteries actually last?
Ruptela Asset5 — up to 3 years at 2 reports/day on its LiSOCl₂ industrial cell, per Ruptela's official spec. Digital Matter Barra GPS — 8+ years on 2× replaceable AA batteries. Run either harder (more frequent reports, more sensor polling) and the window shortens.
Can a battery tracker immobilise the asset?
No — immobilisation needs a permanent relay in the start circuit, which a battery device can't power. Battery trackers are for location, geofence alerts, after-hours movement detection and theft recovery. For immobilisation, see wired-in trackers.
What's the theft-recovery story?
Geofence breach and movement-without-ignition alerts on both devices. On high-theft gear, a hidden Asset5 can additionally pair over Bluetooth with a cab-mounted Ruptela Smart5 — if the Smart5 goes quiet (thief found the visible tracker), the Asset5 enters recovery mode automatically. That companion pairing is Smart5-only.
